The Civil War era would see the first initial decline for farmers influence in the United States. Cotton would continue to become a big industry, but would later lose out to manufactured goods in factories. The 50s were a time of compromise between the South and North. The South mainly farmers ruled the government of the South and opposed the North in their stance on abolitionism. However, the 60s would end this debate with the Civil War. The South seceding and pushing for their own ideals and rights in the country. However, their loss in the Civil War destroyed the influence that farmers had as Republicans or Northerners mainly ruled the Government of the United States. The Southerns were kicked out of the government until the 80s with the election of Grover H. Cleveland.
